AOTD – Mupen

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Think Project64.  For linux.  That’s what Mupen is.  I’d debate that Mupen even works better than Project64 in some cases.  I found this in my search for a Nintendo 64 emulator for linux, since Project64 doesn’t work (well, not native at least).  Plopped some games I had in it, and it mostly worked.  After about 15 minutes of fooling around with the settings I got it to be fully functional.

When it starts up it has a clean interface of all the games you have on it, and then you simply double click the game and it starts up.  For the Gfx plugin, i use glN64, and for Input I use blight’s SDL input.  Other than that I pretty much left the settings alone.

I’d have to say this is probably one of my favorite emulators of all time.  You can get it at http://mupen64.emulation64.com/

Here’s a screenshot from their website:

Battlefield Heroes

The upcoming free game entitled Battlefield Heroes, by Electronic Arts, seems as though it has the potential to be very entertaining.  What makes it seem entertaining?  Well, just look at a screenshot.

Battlefield Heroes

The game is obviously purposefully cartoony, which gives it an almost childish sense of fun.  After watching one of the trailers, all the vehicles seem to be (I may be wrong on this point, after all the sound could have been dubbed over the actual trailer) cartoony – with deaths sounding like an animated cartoon character just threw himself off a cliff.  If you’ve ever played, and fell in love with, Battlefield 1942, you must at least try this game.  It’s planned to be released sometime during Summer 2008 (This summer).  If you play it, let me know what you think!  As for me, I intend to get it the first day it comes out.  It looks very entertaining.

The only downside, as far as I know right now, is that even though the game is free, you have to pay if you want additions to it.  So, if you see that gun you’ve always wanted.. say goodbye cash.

Other than that minor downfall (Which seems reasonable – they have to make some money to keep people employed and servers running), it looks to be a very entertaining game.
